Acne scarring often appears after severe acne breakouts that cause inflammation and damage to the skin's deeper layers. Unfortunately, this means that those who struggle with acne are more likely to experience scarring as well.
The root of the issue lies in the body's natural response to these breakouts. When pimples form, our immune system sends white blood cells to attack the bacteria causing the blemish. In some cases, the inflammation can even reach into the deeper layers of the skin, damaging collagen and elastin fibers that give it its elasticity and strength.
As the skin heals from this damage, it may produce too much or too little collagen, leading to raised or depressed scars respectively. Additionally, the healing process may result in hyper-pigmentation or dis-coloration of the affected area.
Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to prevent acne scarring entirely but try not to pick your acne while it is active as this will almost always cause scarring or hyper-pigmentation. However, seeking professional treatment for severe acne early on can minimize the risk of developing scars. There are also various lasers and facial treatments that can minimize and remove acne scars after they have already appeared.
